Man, those are some big-assed ships.  I probably would need a bow thruster to park one of them  Grin.

And then something more. I always thought the two to three tugs did a good job.

Crazy Horse, thanks for sharing those with us and you took the words right outta my mouth with the reference to V regarding the tugs.  Hey I noticed on the two pics of AD-51, the USS PRAIRIE in the top photo it appears that the superstructure above the bridge and the mast have been reworked.  Is the top photo of the PRAIRIE the newer of the two?

Looking through my pics I found this picture of me re-enlisting a Gunner's Mate in the 5"38 lower handling room of CGC TANEY.

Yes it was. If you also notice in the other picture she had 5 inch guns. If not mistaken she lost them after Vietnam.

Actually I was standing fathanometer watch during sea and anchor leaving Vancouver. The Captain of the McKee kicked the pilot off after we got the message one of our subs hit an underwater mountain and we were needed ASAP in San Diego

Ya know that I'm giving you a ration; I can't even imagine being on the helm of one of those things not to mention having the con.

Specially that size.  If I remember right, we used to have DC drills where the DC (we only had one E-5) and some SA's/SN's would have to go aft and handle the rudder with blocks and tackles; but then again, you could have lifted us up on your davits.

Here's another one of the BLACKHAW taken in the 1960's.  She's still got her 3-inch 50 caliber so I would imagine this photo was taken right before she was refitted for service in Vietnam.

Oh the block n tackle was hanging ready for service. The Prairie had a problem with sticking rudders in her twilight.

Yep, I think it was removed just before her deployment.  I was on her 69/70 but she had been there since 68.  Why would you remove that if you knew what her job was going to be?  Maybe when they removed it they didn't know yet.  We did have the cooles collection of small arms though; M-60's, M-79 grenade launchers, etc., etc.

That's the one; especially the first one.  Brings back memories.
