Sorry Bill (Rusty) I don't have any photos of the 30 and 40 foot utility boats other than what I posted.  For whatever reason they are very difficult to find.

I KNOW that this will sound like an incredibly dumb question to you guys...and I could probably google...but I need to get back to finishing a report...

The boats that went to VietNam do not look all that big in some of the pictures.

Where they sailed over there or piggy-backed onto a much larger ship?

stop snickering.... Undecided

The 82's were piggy-backed.  The Blackhaw went uner her own power and of course Squadron Three got there on their own.

On one of the threads I posted a picture of the 82's loaded up; can't find it right now.

What were they piggy-backed on?

How big was the Blackhaw?

Wasn't it scary? and were there other ships around?

Ah; found it.  It's not my picture, stole if off a website so sorry about the size.

The Blackhaw was 180'.  Didn't make the trip myself, flew in and out.  EX made the trip back to Hawaii, I'm sure he'll chime in.  A 180' does quite well at sea by herself

Wow.....

Think I'll stick with big big BIG cruise ships.  Wink

I get seasick....when we go off Key West to the Marquesas to fish...in a 17-18' center console...I just kinda close my eyes and pray going across the channel and hope we go really, really fast. I'm fine as long as I can see the bottom... Undecided

As a point of interest, the 82316 was Offshore Diesel's (he posts here) boat in Vietnam.

Hans-

When I was on board the Blackhaw they paneled the bridge in mahogany.  Hired a local guy.  He'd come in, take a bunch of measurements, and disappear for a couple days.  Then he'd come back with a big sheet of mahogany plywood with all the cut outs to fit around all the crap that was bolted and welded to the bulkheads.  And it would fit perfectly.  The guy was a helluva craftsman.  He took us to his house once and showed us the power tools he had made himself.

DFeb, the only time itreally sucked while I was on the Blackhaw was when we were sailing back to San Frncisco from the Phillipines.  We broke down some disytance offshore and the wetaher was sloppyier then hell.  Just sat there and rolled for a couple days, then another CG ship towed us in.

As we were being towed in the Rush steamed past us, returning from her deployment to Nam.  They had a welcoming committee in the bay.  Fireboats shooting water, lots of small craft....they had been gone six months.  The Blackhaw had been gone about 5 years and was being towed in.  Kinda sucked.

I'm not sure I could deal with a mahogany panelled bridge.  Musta been some of that extra "brass" money you guys had.  How the hell did he ever get approval to do that; or did he bother asking??
