Boat strikes north
jetty, takes on water

EUREKA, Calif. — The Coast Guard helped the Kahnquest, a 48-ft cabin cruiser that took on water after it hit the north jetty near the entrance of Humboldt Bay, this morning.

The cruiser navigated through the dense fog and struck the north jetty while leaving Humbolt Bay enroute to Los Angeles.   Soon after, a rogue wave slammed the small boat against the jetty again, causing significant damage.

At 1:50 a.m., Kahnquest's skipper radioed mayday, and the Coast Guard directed a 47-ft Motor Life Boat from Station Humboldt Bay to respond.

Although the Kahnquest was taking on water, it was still able to sail with power.  When the Coast Guard crew arrived, its damage control team pumped out water from the boat until 10 a.m. This allowed the Kahnquest to safely transit the harbor to a haul-out facility in Fields Landing in Eureka, Calif., where it was lifted out of the water.

“Last night was some of the thickest fog of the summer on the bar," said Petty Officer 2nd Class John Duncan, a boatswain's mate assigned to Station Humboldt Bay.

Weather on site of the jetty crash was zero visibility, four to six foot seas and light winds.

This is the second incident in the last month of mariners becoming disoriented from dense fog in Humboldt Bay and finding themselves in distress.  Hazardous surf combined with thick fog makes the Humboldt Bay coast a challenging environment for mariners of all experience levels.  Mariners are advised to maintain and use adequate navigation equipment for low visibility conditions.

Coast Guard rescues multiple people from
grounded vessels near Brownsville

RESCUE VIDEO

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — The Coast Guard, along with the Cameron County Constables, South Padre Island Fire Department and the Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Division responded to multiple reports of vessels in distress late Monday night and early Tuesday morning. The vessels were Mexican-flagged fishing boats seeking safe harbor in the Port of Brownsville because of Tropical Storm Hermine.

A 33-foot Response Boat-Small and crew from Station South Padre Island were dispatched to assist the fishing vessel Cameron in the Brownsville Ship Channel near Port Isabel Monday evening. The Cameron was refloated by the incoming tide later in the evening.

The crew of a 33-foot Response Boat-Small from Station South Padre Island also responded to the report of two vessels aground approximately 200 meters from the South Padre Island jetties.  The fishing vessels Don Pesca 67 and Geraldo I remain grounded, and all 10 crewmembers were rescued and treated for minor injuries.

A beach rescue team from Station South Padre Island responded to the grounded fishing vessel Acer II early Tuesday morning. The vessel was drifting toward the beach and reported that the vessel's anchor was disabled north of the South Padre Island jetties. The Acer II's seven crewmembers and a dog were evacuated and treated for minor injuries.

An additional 50 to 70 Mexican-flagged fishing vessels sought safe harbor in the Port of Brownsville.

"The Coast Guard values training and our relationships with partner agencies. This was a good example of how that training pays off when it has to be put to use," said Lt. Mickey Lalor, commanding officer of Station South Padre Island.

Coast Guard rescues 3 from sinking boat

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Coast Guard rescued three people after their boat began to take on water approximately 1.5 miles  east of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge Sunday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg received a 911 relay from the Pinellas County Dispatch at approximately 1:18 p.m., regarding three people in distress after their 22-foot Sea Cat began to take on water. The owner of the vessel called 911 from his cell phone.

The Coast Guard Cutter Hawk, homeported here, was diverted to the scene from a patrol along with a 25-foot small response boat crew from Station St. Petersburg.

Once on scene, the crew of the Hawk was unable to locate the persons in distress. Watchstanders from Sector St. Petersburg directed the 25-foot small response boat crew to conduct a search of the surrounding area.

The 25-foot small response boat crew found the three people in the water clinging to their boat, which had drifted with the current approximately 1.5 miles east of their first location.

The Sea Cat submerged with only had 4-feet of its bow exposed.

The three people were pulled into the small boat safely and taken to O'Neills Marina in St. Petersburg.

Ramon Garza, a 66-year old male and the owner/operator of the Sea Cat has made arrangements with a local company to salvage the vessel.

No injuries were reported.

No pollution was reported.

All three persons in distress were wearing their lifejackets.

The Coast Guard reminds all boaters that in the event of a maritime emergency, the use of a float plan, VHF radio, life jackets and an Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon are critical on the waterways. Check weather conditions before going out and be prepared.
