Coast Guard continues
response to wellhead allision

Wellhead secured

Crews from Wild Well Control Inc. work to control a damaged wellhead spewing oil into the waters of Barataria Bay, Aug. 1, 2010. The wellhead was successfully shut-in at approximately 6 p.m., Sunday. Securing the wellhead, which was hit by a barge July 27, was challenging due to the remote location and shallow water at the site.

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Coast Guard continues to work with the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office LOSCO, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources LDNR, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality LDEQ, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries LAWLF, the Louisiana State Police LSP, and Jefferson Parish Emergency Services to minimize environmental damage resulting from an allision between a tow vessel and a wellhead in the Barataria Waterway, which occurred at approximately 1 a.m., Tuesday. The Unified Command Post, established at U.S. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans, is reporting that the wellhead was secured at 6:05 p.m. Sunday and is no longer emitting oil or natural gas into Barataria Bay.  The wellhead is also equipped with a light. The Unified Command Post will begin an assessment of potential shoreline impact Monday.
"The Unified Command was able to accomplish this in less than a week due to the fantastic cooperation between the federal, state and local officials and efforts of the contractors," stated Capt. John Arenstam, the Coast Guard Federal On Scene Coordinator.

Oil containment and clean-up operations are ongoing as 60,200 feet of containment boom and 14,080 feet of sorbent boom are deployed to minimize the environmental impact. Additionally, 213 personnel and a combination of 47 skimmers, boats and barges are responding to the incident. Oil skimming and recovery operations are ongoing in Mud Lake. Approximately 35 barrels, or 1,470 gallons of oily-water mix, have been recovered and a two-mile safety zone remains in effect around the incident location to protect vessels and mariners from the hazards associated with the release.

The Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund has been enacted to provide monetary support for the clean up and recovery operations.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

Coast Guard rescues man
from beach near Seaside, Ore.

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard rescued a man from an isolated beach at Tillamook Head near at Seaside, Ore., Monday.

The crew of the fishing vessel Jab spotted the 20-year-old man waving his jacket from the beach where he was cut off by the rising tide and called Air Station Astoria, which launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Cape Disappointmen, Wash.

The helicopter crew lowered a rescue basket to the man who was able to climb into the basket and be hoisted into the helicopter.  The man was then taken to Air Station Astoria and transferred to an awaiting ambulance and taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital to be examined for injuries.

Oregon's beaches pose a risk to hikers and beachgoers who often find themselves trapped when the tide comes in.  The Coast Guard recommends that anyone enjoying the beach keep aware of the sea and weather conditions, which can change quickly along Oregon's coast.

Shrimp boat catches
fire in the Pamlico Sound

PAMLICO SOUND, N.C. — Good Samaritans rescued three crewmembers from a burning shrimping vessel near the Bluff Shoal Friday.

Crew members from the fishing vessel Lady Susan safely removed all three crew members from the 75-foot vessel, Last Chance, after Coast Guard watchstanders received calls at  approximately 3:45 p.m., from the crew aboard the North Carolina Ferry Roanoke.

The Roanoke reported seeing heavy smoke to the northwest. At 3:57 p.m., the crew aboard the fishing vessel Lady Susan  also reported seeing the vessel on fire.

Station Hatteras Inlet and Station Ocracoke launched crews on two rescue boats after receiving the initial call. Station Ocracoke’s 24-foot rescue boat crew was the first on scene and found the fishing vessel pilot house fully engulfed in flames.

Station Hatteras Inlet’s 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew arrived and then transferred the three crew members of the fishing vessel to Far Creek in Engelhard, N.C.

"The fishing vessel Last Chance was still on fire at 7 p.m., but it is of no danger to any other boats," said Petty Officer 1st Class Brian Biefeld, Station Hatteras Inlet’s command duty officer.

The Coast Guard has established a safety zone in position 35 degrees 16.08 minutes north and 75 degrees 54.59 minutes west, and will continue to monitor the situation.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation.

Two boaters rescued
after 17 hours in the water

HOUSTON — The crew of a towing vessel rescued two boaters Monday morning after their vessel capsized Sunday afternoon in Trinity Bay.

The crew of the T/V Diamond Back rescued the two people at approximately 8 a.m. Monday morning. The survivors left in a small pleasure craft Sunday from Eagle Point in Galveston County, and were forced into the water after their vessel capsized at approximately 3 p.m. They reported that they were unable to make a distress call.

A Coast Guard 25-foot Response Boat - Small from Station Houston is en route to transport the two back to shore. Their survival is attributed to wearing their life jackets and staying with their vessel after it capsized.

"Due to the circumstances of their situation, they were unable to make a distress call," said Bill Segelken, an operations unit controller at Sector Houston-Galveston. "The fact that they were wearing their life jackets, significantly increased their ability to remain afloat throughout the night."

"Staying with their vessel after it capsized, contributed to them being visible and able to be rescued," he said.

According to the National Safe Boating Council, 85-90% of people who drown in boating accidents are not wearing life jackets.

Coast Guard medevacs woman
from cruise ship Carnival Dream

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — The crew of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter medically evacuated a woman from cruise ship Carnival Dream Thursday morning, approximately 20 nautical miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The 66-year-old woman is a U.S. citizen, who went unconscious and began suffering convulsions after initially complaining of headaches, requiring immediate medical attention ashore.

"The situation this morning was time-critical," said Cmdr. James Sutton, Sector San Juan Chief of Response. "I believe the coordination between the Carnival Dream, the Sector San Juan Command Center and Air Station Borinquen was excellent. The crew of the Coast Guard rescue helicopter performed superbly and completed a highly dangerous evolution without incident. Ultimately, the crew ensured the patient received the emergent medical care she needed by delivering her safely to the hospital."

Coast Guard controllers coordinated with the cruise ship's crew and launched a rescue helicopter from Air Station Borinquen, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico to conduct the medical evacuation.  Once on scene with the Carnival Dream, the helicopter crew hoisted the patient and cruise ship nurse onto the aircraft. The Dolphin helicopter crew transported the patient to the Medical Center Hospital in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, where she transferred to awaiting Emergency Medical Services personnel.

Fisherman safe after boat sinks near Gloucester

A Coast Guard Station Gloucester 47-foot boat crew transits back
to the station after recovering the life raft, emergency position
indicating radio beacon and debris from a vessel that sank off the
coast of Gloucester, Mass., Thurs., Aug. 26, 2010.

USCG photo PO2 Travis Johnson

BOSTON — A fisherman is safe after he was rescued from his sunken 40-foot fishing vessel by a Good Samaritan about three miles east of Gloucester, Mass., Thurs., Aug. 26, 2010.

A Good Samaritan aboard a sailboat sent a Mayday call to the Coast Guard around 11:16 a.m., as he saw the 40-foot Dirty Martha sinking.

The fisherman was able to get in his life raft and the Good Samaritan rescued him shortly after.

A 25-foot and 47-foot boat crew from Coast Guard Station Gloucester met the sailboat and transferred the fisherman to the 25-foot Coast Guard boat. They then transported him back to the station.

The 47-foot boat crew recovered the boat’s life raft, emergency position indicating radio beacon and debris.

The fisherman is in good condition and declined medical assistance.

The fisherman was having engine problems but does not know what caused his vessel to take on water and sink rapidly.

The Dirty Martha is completely submerged in approximately 162-feet of water and is not a hazard to navigation.

It is reported the vessel had approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel on board. There is a sheen where the vessel sank. A sheen is a thin layer of oil or fuel on top of the water that creates a rainbow affect.

The on scene weather was 2-3 foot seas with calm wind.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.
