The germans even buried Panzer Mark IVs [chassis and all] after their running gear or engine were destroyed.  The Mark IV had a small seperate 4 cylinder [sic] engine which was used to power the traverse mechanism of the turret.  It only needed a two-man crew [gunner/commander and loader].  Some innovative crews even welded spaced armor panels on the turret for better protection.

The hatch had a locking mechanism which prevented someone outside the turret from gaining access [to drop a grenade or flame em].  There was a ventilation pipe which ran underground a number of yards away which allowed fresh air.
