I think if I had ever had to pull isolated duty I would have taken Johnston Island over French Frigate shoals or any of the isolated Alaska stations.

No, if I've got the right guy, he was a QM3 on the Blackhaw that served as a non-rate on Johnson Island.

Just curious.  We had a HM1 come in about a month before I left Alameda.  He had been isolated his previous duty station and he was a little strange.

Try the Libyan Desert.  Fly into Marble Arch by C123B out of Naples Italy.  Noisy plane.  NO parachute assigned, but crew (all) wearing chutes.  Gives lots credibility for the flight.
Spent August 1960 to August 1961 here, returned to USA from Whelus AFB Tripoli Libya to Norfolk, VA (sailors & dogs keep OFF the lawn, like Groton & New London CN _ with out the service their enconomy would die!!)

would patch some photos, but system does not avail itself to modern feats!!!

Thanks for the show!  I truly enjoyed it!!

I had the honor of being the last commanding officer of Lorsta Johntson Island.  Loved the island, the duty and being the boss!  Hated all those frigging birds, though!  They'd **** on you for no apparent reason.

It was a great place to serve one's nation!

Kinda like Newport, R.I. during the late 60's.
