As I recall we got the glass 30 during the summer of 63. It was fast but hard to handle in the current of river.

Anyone up on the Lakes near Washington Island,WI looking for a summer project other than cutting the lawn ???

The current "Boats & Harbors" a kind of marine industry "want ads" has a 30' USCG steel UTB for sale $ 10K or best offer. Could turn into a nice little restoration, or with a lighter weight, higher HP new diesel a pretty "hot to trot" eye turner.

www.boats-and-harbors.com       but I could not find the listing there

When I was at YBI (Yerba Buena Island, SF Bay 70-72) I got to drive the 427, don't recall if the 426 was there but I think it was.  All the wooden boats were gone by then.  And, you're RIGHT, you could make those 40 boats walk sideways, no probelm...brought 'em into the fuel docks there at YBI that way almost all the time.  You may not have liked the plastic (actually fiberglass) 40's  but they could haul ass.  Those V-6 engines put out more RPM and scooted across the bay.  They may have been faster, but the steel 40's were very forgiving in close quarters...the plastic ones had alot more sail area and were lighter, so they were influenced by tide, current and wind more easily...in SF Bay, that was a constant fight.  STILL loved the challange of the single screw 40 that I was assigned to....593...believe it or not a little faster than the twin screw 40's but not as fast at the plastic 40's (we had races up the Oakland estuary)

BUGSEY   Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up  That puppy is looking BEAUTIFUL!  But don't take it out just yet......I noticed that there is no compass   Pretty deck....but ya gonna put some nonskid on that?  The engine cover is PERFECT!  I can't believe you rebuilt that to PERFECTION I'm Not Worthy!  GOD!  How I'd LOVE to take that around the bay again...I wouldn't have to take Viagra for a MONTH! Great looking 40' UTB.

One quick observation, if I may. Around 1966 or so there was a boat alteration to the exhaust system piping. The pipes were run above the deck and out the stern so they were above the waterline. It was explained to this poor SA that it was because there had been exhaust rust out problems below the deck that weren't detected and resulted in the boats nearly sinking at the moorage.

Might be something to think about before buttoning her up.

Regards

Dana

My roommate at YBI came off the Blackhaw...ETN2 Dean Seaquist.  He had a drinkin' buddy on the Blackhaw, can't remember his name but it was a QMC.  Did you take the ride from the Philippines to YBI?

I was one of Seaquist's drinking buddies in the P.I.  The QM (was a QM 1 when I knew him) was Mitchell.  The three of us spent a LOT of time together hitting the various bars in Cavite, as well as the ones in Vung Tau.  I think Mitch told me Seaquist is still in the bay area somewhere.
