hmmm! As I recall with good natured banter there were two retorts that we Coasties used to throw back at you Squids.  To the ever present "you have to be six feet tall to join the coast guard so you can walk ashore, there was this. "That's  right, the nearest land was 2 miles away, STRAIGHT DOWN!" then there was the ever popular all purpose "The Coast Guard is that hard core around which the Navy forms in time of war!"  However, My father and uncle were Naval Officers and my son is a Naval Officer just recently off the SSBN USS Louisana so I'll cut you Navy guys some slack.

And now for some serious news folks the USS ZUNI-USCGC TAMAROA has been underway by tow since 9:30 yesterday morning. She should be arriving in Newport News in a few hours. If any of you Navy guys live in the vicinity, go see her, volunteer to help, we need all the help we can get to restore this once great lady to her 1944 USS ZUNI configuration.

Thanks,

ollie

Update: The Tam is about an hour from Newport News. I'm told a TV crew is waiting for her  arrival. We're certainly generating some excitement.

That's great news Bill, I hope the press exposure you get will generate some revenues for the Zuni Foundation and some volunteers to help maintain the ship.

Effin chooch,    What the hell do you know about ships ... the Navy doesn't have ships

Today's Navy has vessels over 1,000-feet long with a compliment of about 6,000 Squids, this is no ship.  When you have onboard enough food and supplies to operate for 90 days, serving 18,150 meals every day, have distillation plants that provide 400,000 gallons of fresh water from sea water daily, (enough for 2000 homes), nearly 30,000 light fixtures and 1,325 miles of cable and wiring for 1,400 telephones, 14,000 pillowcases and 28,000  sheets and it costs taxpayers approximately $250,000 per day for pier side operation and approximately $2.5 million per day for underway operations THAT'S NO SHIP ... IT'S A FRIGGIN FLOATING CITY CHOOCH!

Now Coastie's got ships, friggin Squids don't have ships .........

Buoy - Any bets on how long some of these tough takin' squids would keep from turnin' green if they went to sea in anything other than a floating city.  Maybe we could try to arange a short cruise in the crows nest on the Eagle, or take them to Cape Disappointment to make a training run.

Or a SAR excursion on the Great Lakes in late November.
